Brisbane Greener Future
Brisbane Greener Future is an interactive data visualization experience which allows users to understand the relationship between trees and heat in our urban environments. This project was created as apart of my final capstone unit for my design degree. The brief was very open and flexible as to what our project could focus and how we'd implement the design solution. As someone who has always been interested in urban planning and smart urban design, I've always been thinking about how our own cities could be improved and made to feel more liveable. In Brisbane, the lack of trees and shade due to continuous urban sprawl is a major issue especially with a changing climate. I wanted to highlight this topic in a simple, fun and succinct way to help spread awareness.

The Design Approach
My goal for the design's overall style was to be minimalistic, bold, fun with a flair of 'science'. I took inspiration from a variety of data visualization examples online and was interested in utilizing images and visuals to convey information rather than text. In consideration of this, the colour palette employed colours with existing connotations such as 'green' shades to represent the level of tree coverage and the yellow-to-red scale to illustrate heat. A hexmap of Brisbane was used to visualize data as hexagons are easy to use and are great at representing data either through scale or colour.

Navigating the space
The experience follows a linear progression controlled by vertical scrolling. A dotted UI element on the right side of the page serves as a visual indicator of the user's current position in the narrative. As users scroll, they can observe the relationship between tree coverage and urban heat through smooth transitions between the two maps. While the interface responds to scroll input, it doesn't actually move the page vertically - instead, scrolling triggers transitions and animations that advance the narrative.

Retrospective
This experience transforms a typically mundane concept into an engaging, joyful exploration through carefully designed interactive elements. By making urban heat and sustainability concepts accessible and shareable across social media, we aim to raise widespread awareness of these crucial urban issues while inspiring users to take active roles in their communities - whether through tree planting initiatives or broader involvement in neighborhood care. The ultimate goal is to spark genuine interest in sustainable urban planning while facilitating meaningful change through increased public understanding and participation.
