40 Years Strong

A large-scale print and digital campaign to celebrate 40 years.

OVERVIEW

To celebrate the RBWH Foundation's 40th Anniversary, we launched the 40 YEARS STRONG campaign, bringing four decades of hospital stories, experiences, and connections to life. The campaign showcased key milestones through multiple installations, including a 15-screen digital timeline and a large digital clock. We extended the celebration across the hospital campus with posters, lift prints, banners, and building wraps.

MY ROLE

My role in this campaign was focused heavily on the UX and UI of the campaign's digital experiences, including the 40-year timeline and "40 YEARS STRONG Stories" — an online digital book featuring recorded narratives from patients and staff, curated by renowned author and artist-in-residence, Nick Earls. I created the design system, led presentations with clients in person and worked closely with developers to deliver a smooth web experience.

What was the challenge?
Condensing and bringing to light 40 years of history

To highlight the RBWH Foundation's 40 Anniversary in 2025, our team needed to find a way to bring to life 40 years of inspiring stories of strength and resilience from both patients and staff of the Royal Brisbane & Women's Hospital. This would need to be delivered in a large-scale campaign with a range of digital activations and campaign collateral.

What was our approach?
A comphrensive large-scale digital and print campaign

A cohesive and engaging large-scale digital and print campaign built on the phrase 40 YEARS STRONG. The hospital's busy main entrance, welcoming 600,000 patients and families each year, now features an interactive digital clock installation with touchless donation capabilities alongside a fifteen-screen display showcasing milestone moments from the foundation's history. Throughout the facility, the campaign continues with banners, elevator displays, and informational posters, while digitally we introduced the "40 Strong Stories" collection—a series of compelling narratives about patients and staff created by Nick Earls, our distinguished author and artist-in-residence.

The design process
Designing to highlight patient and staff stories

During the design phase, I understood that the timeline experience would be displayed on a large 15-screen wall as well as on a web page so accessibility and also design flexibility was very important. Utilising the existing RBWH brand colours, I designed a new styleguide to inform the visuals of these new digital experiences whilst still adhering to the brand look. Once we had arrived at a visual look and functionality we were happy with - I begin creating detailed Figma prototypes to demonstrate animations and interactivity to the client and to also use as an example for the developers. I wanted these experiences to feel like timeless spaces, an infinite scrollable interface that would allow users to continuously relive each of these inspiring moments anytime they wanted. Because of this, animation came to play a crucial role in this project with lottie animations exported from After Effects being employed to create each of the yearly moment collages.
